🇧🇷 Brazil: How They Got Here

Brazil won Group C with seven points, opening with a 1-1 draw against Morocco at MetLife Stadium before beating Haiti 3-0 in Philadelphia and Scotland 3-0 in Miami.

In the Round of 32, Gabriel Martinelli scored in the final moments to give Brazil a last-gasp 2-1 victory over Japan in Houston. Japan had taken the lead through Kaishu Sano in the 29th minute, before Casemiro equalised with a header in the 56th minute and Martinelli sealed the win with a 90+5' strike.

It was a nervous night that exposed some real concerns. Brazil's midfield was massively exposed against Japan. Casemiro looked slow to the play, getting booked early on. Lucas Paquetá struggled to get in the game before coming off at half-time with injury. Ancelotti still does not know his best Brazil XI, and that uncertainty spreads to the team. Brazil start games slowly, and better teams will put them away earlier.

Players to watch:

  • Vinícius Júnior: four goals in the tournament so far, the talisman and Brazil's most dangerous weapon in transition
  • Bruno Guimarães: excelled at both ends of the pitch against Japan and is Brazil's most consistent midfield presence
  • Gabriel Martinelli: the supersub who won the Japan game; pushing hard for a starting spot here
  • Endrick: the teenage prodigy who came off the bench against Japan; Carlo Ancelotti may hand him a bigger role
  • Cunha: dangerous in tight spaces between the lines, expected to start wide

🇳🇴 Norway: How They Got Here

Norway finished Group I runners-up behind France, beating Iraq 4-1 and Senegal 3-2 before resting key players in a 1-4 defeat to France. It is Norway's first World Cup since 1998, a 28-year wait that has ended in style.

In the Round of 32, Erling Haaland sent Norway into the Round of 16 by scoring an 86th-minute winner against Ivory Coast. Antonio Nusa had curled a stunning strike into the top corner in the 39th minute to give Norway the lead, before Amad Diallo levelled for Ivory Coast on 74 minutes with an outstanding solo goal. Haaland, who had been quiet throughout, delivered once again when he converted Patrick Berg's pass from close range.

It was Norway's first-ever World Cup knockout stage win.

Players to watch:

  • Erling Haaland (Man City): five goals in three games at this World Cup, taking his international tally to 60 goals in 53 games and becoming the fastest player ever to reach that milestone. One goal behind Messi in the Golden Boot race.
  • Martin Ødegaard (Arsenal): the first player to record assists in three straight World Cup matches since Dirk Kuyt of the Netherlands in 2010. The creative brain of the entire operation.
  • Antonio Nusa (RB Leipzig): electric wide forward who scored against Ivory Coast; one of the tournament's breakout stars
  • Oscar Bobb (Fulham): provided the assist for Haaland's winner; tireless and technically sharp from the right
  • Sander Berge (Fulham): the physical midfield anchor who gives Norway their defensive shape

The Sub-Plot Nobody Can Ignore: Haaland vs Gabriel

The highlights of their rivalry include Haaland chucking a ball at Gabriel's head after Man City equalised late against Arsenal in September 2024. The return fixture saw Gabriel celebrate in Haaland's face as Arsenal beat City 5-1. Their last meeting in April of this year saw Gabriel avoid a red card for an attempted headbutt on Haaland, who chose not to go to ground after the contact.

Now, on the grandest stage in football, the feud comes to MetLife Stadium. Two players who genuinely dislike each other, competing for a World Cup quarter-final. There is no subplot at this tournament more compelling.

Tactical Preview

Brazil under Carlo Ancelotti will look to dominate possession and use the width of MetLife Stadium to stretch Norway's compact defensive block. The key tactical question is up front: Matheus Cunha's quiet display against Japan proved he is not a natural No.9, and Ancelotti has yet to settle on his best striker option between Cunha, Endrick and Martinelli. Against Norway's aerial strength, pace in behind could be more valuable than hold-up play.

Norway under Ståle Solbakken will set up to frustrate Brazil in possession and hit them on the counter through Haaland's explosive running into space and Ødegaard's vision. Norway could implement a fairly conservative approach, dropping deep to leave very little space for Brazil. Haaland will have plenty of room to exploit his greatest strength: breaking quickly and attacking space.

The key battle: Bruno Guimarães vs Martin Ødegaard in midfield. If Norway can win that battle, they have the platform to cause a genuine upset. If Brazil's midfield controls tempo, Norway's defence will spend a long night under pressure.

The Stage: MetLife Stadium

MetLife Stadium, with a capacity of 82,500 spectators, is one of the largest venues in the 2026 World Cup. It hosted the tournament's opening match (Brazil 1-1 Morocco on June 13) and now stages one of the Round of 16's most anticipated ties. Monday's Brazil vs Japan victory came on the anniversary of Brazil's first World Cup championship in Sweden in 1958, when a 17-year-old Pelé scored two goals in the final. History has followed Brazil to New Jersey all tournament.

Prediction

Brazil are the favourites and rightly so; the squad depth, the individual quality, and the experience of big occasions make them a formidable opponent at this stage. But the Japan game showed a team that is still fragile, still inconsistent, and still searching for its best form.

Norway, meanwhile, arrive with momentum, a historic first knockout win behind them, and the most dangerous striker in world football in Haaland. If Brazil start slowly again as they have in every game so far, Haaland only needs one chance.

Our prediction: Brazil 2-1 Norway

Brazil's quality wins out in the end, but this will be closer than the scoreline suggests. Haaland will score. He always does.

Path to the Quarter-Finals

The winner of Brazil vs Norway advances to the Quarter-finals on July 11 at Hard Rock Stadium, Miami, where they will face the winner of Mexico vs England.
