Sixteen
stadiums. Three countries. One trophy. The 2026 FIFA World Cup has the most
ambitious venue footprint in the history of the competition, and what's
remarkable is that every single one of these arenas already existed before the
tournament was awarded. No city had to build a white elephant stadium
just for football.
From the legendary bowl of the Azteca, a ground that has
hosted two World Cup finals and Maradona's "Hand of God" goal, to
the glass-and-steel giants of the American NFL, every venue brings something
unique. Here's your complete guide to all 16 stadiums.
The Most Historic Venue: Estadio Azteca, Mexico City
If any stadium on this list deserves its own chapter in
football history, it's the Azteca. Capacity ~87,000, it has hosted
more international football matches than any other ground on earth. The 1970
World Cup final was played here. The 1986 World Cup final was played here.
Maradona's "Hand of God" and "Goal of the Century" both
scored here, in 1986. Pelé's greatest tournament 1970, happened on this
grass.
Mexico opening the 2026 tournament here against South Africa on June 11 will be a genuinely goosebump moment. There are few places on earth where football history feels as physical and present as it does inside the Azteca.
The Biggest Stage: MetLife Stadium, New Jersey (The Final)
MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, just 8
miles from Midtown Manhattan, will host the 2026 World Cup Final on July 19.
With a capacity of 82,500, it will be the largest venue ever to
host a World Cup final. The stadium is rebranded as "New York New Jersey
Stadium" for the duration of the tournament to comply with FIFA's
commercial naming rules. The semi-finals are set for AT&T Stadium in Dallas
and Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
What Are the New Stadiums Being Used in 2026?
A common question, and the answer might surprise you. There
are no brand-new stadiums built specifically for 2026. Instead, FIFA chose to
use existing world-class venues and invest in temporary infrastructure like
pitch overlays, additional seating, and fan facilities. This is actually a
significant departure from tournaments like Qatar 2022, where stadiums were
built from scratch at enormous environmental and financial cost.
The closest thing to a "new" venue is SoFi
Stadium in Inglewood, California, which only opened in 2020 and is hosting
its first major international football tournament. It's a stunning,
state-of-the-art facility with a retractable roof and one of the most visually
spectacular interiors in world sport. The USA's opening match against Paraguay
on June 12 will be played here, it's going to be electric.
The Canadian Venues
Canada's two venues, BMO Field in Toronto and BC
Place in Vancouver, are football-first stadiums, not NFL conversions.
BMO Field is home to Toronto FC of MLS and has been expanded to around 45,000
for the tournament. BC Place in Vancouver is a multi-purpose indoor stadium
with a retractable roof, giving it a uniquely intimate atmosphere for an
international tournament. Canada opens their World Cup against Bosnia and Herzegovina
at BMO Field on June 12, their first home World Cup match ever.
What NFL Stadiums Are Being Used?
The majority of US venues are NFL stadiums that have been
converted for football (soccer). The key conversion work involves installing a
natural grass pitch over the artificial turf, adjusting seating configurations,
and building out player facilities to FIFA's standards. The conversion process
typically takes several weeks and has been completed successfully at similar
tournaments before. The stadiums involved include MetLife (Giants/Jets),
AT&T (Cowboys), SoFi (Rams/Chargers), Mercedes-Benz (Falcons), Lumen Field
(Seahawks), Arrowhead (Chiefs), NRG (Texans), Hard Rock (Dolphins), Lincoln
Financial (Eagles), Gillette (Patriots), and Levi's (49ers).
"Every single host stadium brings a unique atmosphere, history, and identity to this tournament. That's what makes the 2026 World Cup genuinely different: 16 stories, not just one." FIFA venue coordinator, April 2026.
