Let me save
you about three hours of scrolling through FIFA's website. The 2026 World Cup
schedule is genuinely complex: 48 teams, 12 groups, 104 matches, 16 cities
across three countries. It's a lot to process. So I've done the work for you,
picked out the matches that actually matter, and organised everything you need
to know in one place.
Whether
you're planning which games to watch, trying to figure out when your country
plays, or just want to understand how this new expanded format works, this is
your guide.
How the New Format Works
If you've
watched previous World Cups, you're used to 8 groups of 4 teams. The 2026
edition changes that to 12 groups of 4 teams, to accommodate the
expansion from 32 to 48 teams. Each team still plays 3 group stage matches. The
top 2 from each group advance automatically, plus the 8 best third-place teams, giving you 32 teams in the Round of 32 (what used to be the Round of 16).
What this
means in practice: more nations get a realistic chance to progress. More
potential upsets. More drama. And yes, more matches overall, which is either a
blessing or a challenge depending on how much you love football. (If you're
reading this blog, the answer is probably: bring it on.)
The Key Groups to Watch
Group D - USA's Home Opener
We covered this in our USA preview, but it bears repeating: USA, Paraguay, Australia, Türkiye. The Americans open on June 12 at SoFi Stadium. This is the group that will generate the most noise inside the United States. Expect sold-out stadiums and a level of atmosphere American football hasn't seen before.
Group H - Spain's Challenge
Spain, Saudi Arabia, Cape Verde, and Czechia are all playing in Atlanta. Spain are heavy favourites to top this group, but Saudi Arabia pulled off one of the biggest World Cup upsets ever when they beat Argentina in 2022. Lamine Yamal's first World Cup minutes will be watched by hundreds of millions.
Group J - Argentina's Title Defence Begins
Argentina, Algeria, Austria, and Jordan are playing in Dallas and Kansas City. Argentina open their title defence on June 16 against Algeria. And yes, Messi's status makes every single Argentina match appointment viewing regardless of the opponent.
Group K - The South American Battle
Colombia, Uzbekistan, DR Congo, and the Netherlands are playing in Atlanta. Colombia vs Netherlands is a match that could easily be a knockout game from any previous World Cup. The expanded format means clashes like this are now in the group stage. Lucky us.
The Matches You Absolutely Cannot Miss
⚽ Must-Watch Group Stage Fixtures
Mexico vs South Africa, June 11, Estadio Azteca: The tournament opener. The most historic stadium in World Cup history. Mexico's home crowd. The first match of a new era in World Cup football.
USA vs Paraguay, June 12, SoFi Stadium: America's home opener. 70,000 fans. The most important match in USMNT history in terms of atmosphere and expectation.
Argentina vs Algeria, June 16, Kansas City: Argentina's title defence begins. Messi (possibly) returns to a World Cup stage. Algeria, who beat them on away goals in a friendly context before, are fired up.
Netherlands vs Japan, Dallas: A classic clash between two technically exceptional sides. Japan's rise in world football makes this one of the most intriguing tactical matchups in the group stage.
England vs Croatia, Dallas: Euro 2020 semifinal. World Cup 2018 semifinal. These two sides keep finding each other in the biggest moments. Round three in the group stage.

How to Watch Every Match
In the
United States, World Cup 2026 matches will be broadcast on Fox Sports and Telemundo (Spanish
language). Streaming options include the Fox Sports app and Peacock. In other
countries, check your local broadcaster. FIFA has agreements with broadcasters
in virtually every nation on earth.
One
practical tip: with 104 matches across 39 days, scheduling conflicts are
inevitable. Not every match will be at a convenient time, depending on your time
zone. The tournament spans all three North American time zones, so kick-off
times range from early morning to evening, depending on where you are and which city is hosting.
